I'd suggest looking around for an HP 3396 Integrator. There are a number of them out there, and now that everyone wants to use software, they are practically being given away. One of our professors picked up one for a pittance($5 or so, as I recall) at a university surplus sale because no one else knew what it was. I love the HP integrators because they're so incredibly easy to hook up. Unlike a traditional strip chart recorder, where you have to tell it the working voltage, the HPs can take anything up to 50 volts and has no trouble integrating the peaks over this entire range. You have to play with the attenuation if you want to keep the peaks from going off scale, however it will still have no trouble whatsoever integrating no matter how far offscale they go. I don't believe there's any way to interface an automatic start to the Varian 3400, however it's not a big deal to just inject and then hit the start button on the integrator. We use ours with an HP5890, and actually have to hit start on the front of the GC as well as on the integrator. Since the Varian 3400 has the nifty start button built into the injection port, you're saved this extra step. Then, of course, there's always the traditional strip chart recorder. I'm not a huge fan of these, however they're in even less demand today than integrators. One of my favorite ones I've used is the Kipp & Zonen BD40, for which consumables(paper, pens) are still readily available. |
